Traditional costumes

From the beginning of the nineteenth century, volendammers remained faithful to their traditional costumes. The clothes were decorated and made more ornate and gradually formed into the specific Volendammer clothing that was worn until the sixties of the last century and is now invariably fixed as the Volendammer traditional costume.

Because of the isolated location of Volendam, the character of the Volendammers with their pride and with their desire to be the best and the best, the Volendammers have preserved their own customs, their dialect and their costumes. The costumes, especially those of the women, have given Volendam international fame and became the symbol of Holland. This was due to the hundreds of international painters who worked in Volendam around 1900. At that time, their paintings were distributed all over the world and - together with the advertising notes of the travel agencies - captured the image of Holland as a Volendammer woman in traditional costume with a mill and tulip fields in the background. After the Second World War, the wearing of the costume deteriorated more, first with the men and later with the women. Now the beautiful ornate gestation has almost completely disappeared from the streets.
