Music is also very popular in Volendam. Many artists come from Volendam. The music from Volendam is also called 'Palingsound'. Paling sound is the distinctive sound of 'Paling pop', a type of pop music written and sung by Volendam artists

The fish trade plays a big role in Volendam. The most famous fish in Volendam is the smoked eel. Eels smoking has been done in Volendam for centuries. Herring is also a well-known species of fish in Volendam and of course a Dutch tradition of eating herring raw and upside down.

From the beginning of the nineteenth century, volendammers remained faithful to their traditional costumes. The clothes were decorated and made more ornate and gradually formed into the specific Volendammer clothing that was worn until the sixties of the last century and is now invariably fixed as the Volendammer traditional costume.
